Anthony Khawaja Director of EuLDP Programme

SOE launched a Leadership Development programme for Ophthalmologists with a potential to become leaders in European Ophthalmology in 2005. The Ophthalmologists participating in this programme are nominated by their European National Societies and should not exceed approx. 30 in total for each programme. The duration of each programme is 2 years and starts and ends at the European Congress of Ophthalmology. The programme has been highly successful in identifying and training personalities who are taking responsibilities within European Ophthalmology and in collaborating closely with the American and Pan-American Societies (AAO and PAAO).  The Director of the European Leadership Development Programme is Anthony Khawaja PhD FRCOphth from Moorfields Hospital, UK.

The general aims of the EuLDP are:

  • To identify future leaders in European Ophthalmology and provide them with an  informal network of peers
  • To provide a basic leadership training programme adapted for Ophthalmology
  • To create an interactive forum with the ophthalmic and pharmaceutical industry by inviting industry representatives and presenting their perspectives to future Ophthalmology leaders
  • To enhance advocacy issues in a European perspective
  • To promote ophthalmology and the European Society of Ophthalmology in general, especially by providing background information on European Health Policy Legislation and the various issues of harmonization of health provision within EU and European countries in general
  • To train future Ophthalmology teachers in matters of harmonising Ophthalmology training within Europe
  • To create a forum to enhance collaboration with the AAO and PAAO
