The first half of the 2007/09 EuLDP was completed at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden in early April 2008. Like the first EuLDP, this working module was completed in collaboration with Professor Mats Brommels, Medical Management Centre, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
A total of 24 participants from 17 countries attended lectures and seminars during a 3-day course. Presentations included diverse topics like patient empowerment, EU health legislation and policy, scientific leadership, how to deal with politicians, lobbying and advocacy, the industry perspective, creating a corporate culture among professionals, and implementing clinical guidelines. For talks on EU legislation, Ms Jennifer Bremner, Director, European Heath Management Association and associates had joined the course from Brussels.
A special presentation included a perspective on SOE and other supranational organisations relating to ophthalmology. The optometry issue was highlighted by one of the EuLDP students, Dr Amalia Miranda, President, Oklahoma Academy of Ophthalmology.
A preliminary evaluation indicates that this module was very well received with nearly all presentation assessed as appropriate or highly appropriate by the participants.
The module was financially supported by AlconLabs and Allergan. Mr Rogier Janssens, General Manager of the Nordic and Baltic countries, AlconLabs participated with a presentation on leadership from the industry perspective.
At the Karolinska Institutet, EuLDP Director, Stefan Seregard, was joined by Nikos Bechrakis. Professor Bechrakis will now take charge of the EuLDP and run the second module which will take place in San Francisco, CA in late January, 2009 in collaboration with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Pan-American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Participants of the 2007/09 EuLDP are expected to provide a short presentation of a project of their choice relating to ophthalmology and of benefit to their national society or to SOE. Graduation will take place at the SOE 2009 Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in June 2009.
