SOE Grant Observership – Athens Eye Hospital

The Athens Eye Hospital was a very modern facility, I had the opportunity to see the latest technology, the staff was very hospitable and well-prepared.

Although a very busy clinic, the attending physicians always took the time to explain everything and address to all my questions.

My observership at the AEH lasted from the 6th of September till the 19th of October. I was more interested in the Cornea, Ocular surface and Refractive Surgery so I spent most of the time (around 4 weeks) at this department with Dr Panagiotis Zafirakis. It was a very productive time and I had the opportunity to see a lot of interesting cases and also challenging surgeries in Anterior Segment. Mr Zafirakis was very kind and patient to explain to me most of the procedures. Also I saw a lot of Refractive surgery cases some of them although quite complicated were perfectly managed.

A lot of Retina consultations and surgeries took place mostly performed by Dr Rallatos, a well-known retina specialist. I took the time to discuss the most up-to-date treatment regimens in the Retina field.

Eventually I saw several strabismus surgeries and pediatric ophthalmology cases performed by Dr Gerassimos, a specialist in this field.

Overall, I would describe this observership as a very helpful experience that changed considerably my understanding on several issues in Ophthalmology and motivated me even more to become a specialist in Cornea and Refractive Surgery.
