Richard L Abbott photo2014The International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of Richard L. Abbott, MD, as the 2014 International Duke Elder medalist. The Duke Elder Medal is awarded every four years to an ophthalmologist who, by his/her distinction, leadership, and teaching, has contributed most to the development of international relations and friendship between ophthalmologists, and who has advanced the field by his/her contributions in writing and organization in ophthalmology

Dr. Abbott is an internationally renowned ophthalmologist who treats patients with corneal and external diseases of the eye. In addition to research and teaching, Dr. Abbott is recognized internationally for leadership in the definition of clinical practice guidelines, development of cognitive knowledge modules, and ethics regarding eye care and eye surgery.
