Lýdia Hankovská Educational Grant Observership Report – St.Eriks Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to SOE Educational Committee and Professor Marko Hawlina.  As the recipient of 2017 Educational Grant for ophthalmologists-in-training, I was given the opportunity to spend one-month at the St. Eriks Eye Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. I chose Medical retina and Oculoplastic surgery department.
My stay was well organized – I joined the outpatient clinic as well as operating theatre. I had the opportunity to attend educational presentations such as grand rounds, lectures, and seminars. All medical professionals were helpful and friendly. The environment at the clinic was great.

The working conditions allow the specialists to give their best to the patients in low stress atmosphere. I strongly appreciate established education for their residents. I received many crucial pieces of advice for my ophthalmologist practise and effective work. I had difficulties to understand conversation with patients in Swedish (after patient left, everything was explained to me).
At Oculoplastic surgery department I had a chance to see rare conditions and more unique operating procedures. Unfortunately I could only look at the procedures, not to assist. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to doctor Sylvia Sarman, Stamatis Aslanis, Elin Bohman, Rikard Linderoth and all the members who guided me through my observership. Concluding to my report, I would highly recommend the St. Eriks Eye Hospital in Stockholm as an observership centre to future SOE Educational Grant winners.
Last but not the least, I have to mention that Stockholm is beautiful city with many sightseeing opportunities, museums and attractions.
