Dolika D. Vasović, Educational Obsevership report, Helsinki University

My SOE Educational Grant experience in Finland was an exceptional and deeply inspiring opportunity that marked one of the highlights of my professional development. I spent a month at the Department of Ophthalmology, Helsinki University Hospital (HUS), where I had the great honour and privilege to work under the mentorship of Professor Tero Kivelä, one of the most distinguished experts in ocular oncology worldwide.
Working closely with Prof. Kivelä was a truly transformative experience, his vast knowledge, analytical precision, and dedication to teaching left a profound impression on me. His openness in sharing expertise, thoughtful discussions about complex cases, and genuine support for young ophthalmologists made every moment a valuable learning experience. Observing his meticulous approach to both clinical work and research strengthened my own academic and professional vision.
During my stay, I was able to observe a broad range of oculoplastic and ocular oncology procedures, engage in scientific discussions, and gain insight into Finland’s highly structured, collaborative, and patient-centered healthcare system. The environment at HUS fostered excellence, precision, and collegiality, which made each day both challenging and inspiring.
Beyond the hospital setting, Helsinki’s calm rhythm and cultural richness provided an ideal background for reflection and growth. I left Finland profoundly grateful to the SOE Educational Committee for this outstanding opportunity, and to Professor Kivelä for his guidance, trust, and generosity. This experience reinforced my dedication to continuous learning and my aspiration to further contribute to the advancement of ophthalmology, particularly in the fields of ocular oncology and oculoplastic surgery.
