Monika Zalinian, Georgia, Observership Report from Universitätsklinikum Ulm, Augenheilkunde, Ulm, Germany

I would like to express my gratitude to the SOE Educational Committee and Professor Marko Hawlina, for awarding me the educational grant for Ophthalmologists-in-training.

I spent three weeks at the ophthalmology department where I observed and examined a number of patients, observed and assisted a very interesting wide range of ophthalmic surgeries. Furthermore, I had the possibility to observe anterior and posterior segment rare pathologies, acquired new laser treatment approaches and incredible surgical procedures. The Centre is equipped with high-tech diagnostic and surgical equipment, surgical simulator room – new platform generation EyeSi.
I was able to follow the patients from pre-operating to post-operating care, and discuss with the colleagues the relevant ways of their treatment.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. Armin Wolf and his amazing medical staff for giving me the unique chance of fellowship and for sharing his professional experience which contributed in increasing both my theoretical knowledge and practical skills. I would highly recommend this world class centre to all my colleagues to apply in the future for the SOE Educational Grant.
Beside the educational aspect I have to admit that Ulm is a beautiful and interesting city with the world’s highest church, Ulm Minster.
