SOE Incoming President – Tero Kivelä, MD, FEBO

SOE are delighted to confirm that the new President is Tero Kivelä, MD, FEBO.

Tero is Professor and Chair at the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital, Finland, since 2004. He is Director of its Ocular Oncology Service and Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory since 1995, President of the European University Professors in Ophthalmology (EUPO) since 2017, and the Finnish delegate in SOE since 2022. He is also founding member of the European Ophthalmic Oncology Group (OOG) since 1991 and of the International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO) since 2009 and its General Secretary in 2009-2011, and President of the European Ophthalmic Pathology Society (EOPS) in 2018-2021.

He has held several offices in organisations promoting education and research in ophthalmology: European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) in 2001-2008 with Presidency in 2005-2006 and Advisory Committee membership in 2017-2025; European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER) as Chair of Ocular Oncology and Pathology in 2001-2011, with Presidency in 2006; European Academy of Ophthalmology since 2006; International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) in 2007-2014; and Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI) since 2012.

He is Co-Editor of Acta Ophthalmologica and Editorial Board Member of American Journal of Ophthalmology, European Journal of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, and Ocular Oncology and Pathology.

He is Honorary Member of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society, and recipient of Acta Ophthalmologica Honorary Award, Ophthalmic Pathology Award of ICO, Stallard Medal of ISOO, Peter Eustace Medal of EBO, and Bjerrum Medal of the Danish Ophthalmological Society.

His long-time fields of interest include clinical and applied ophthalmic pathology, ocular oncology, Paediatric ophthalmology, and medical statistics. He has published over 290 peer-reviewed papers.
