SOE Observership- Katerina Schreiberova, Czech Republic at Clinica Oculistica, Policlinico Vittorio Emanuelle Catania, Sicily

 

At first I would like to thank SOE, that gave me an opportunity to visit, in my opinion, one of the best ophthalmology centres in Europe.

I attended the Department of Ophthalmology at University Clinic of  Catania,
( policlinico Vittorioe Emanuele) in Italy  from 24/7 to 23/8 2017.  Special thanks to Professor Teresio Avitabile, chairman of the clinic and doctor Mario Toro who were really kind and perfect educators. I was impressed by their knowledge and it was great pleasure for me to observe their clinical and surgical skills as well.

Most of my time I spent observing a wide range of ophthalmic surgeries including oculoplastic surgeries, entropion, ectropion, blepharochalasis correction, cataract surgery,  retinal detachement and also treatment of ocular tumours- brachytherapy of choroidal melanomas. This centre was the first Italian centre where protontherapy for tumors treatment was applied and where is possible to treat ocular melanoma with proton beams.

My observership gave me the chance to improve my knowledge and ophthalmology skills. I met new colleagues and new friends. I would really  recommend this centre, and especially for all who are interested in ocular tumours and vitreoretinal surgery.
