Tamari Gedenidze & Ketevan Chiokadze Teacher grant report , Belgium
We would like to thank the European Society of Ophthalmology for the opportunity it provides each year to young ophthalmologists to improve their practice and knowledge in leading clinics.
My colleague, Tamari Gedenidze, and I, Ketevan Chiokadze, received an SOE Teacher Grant, which allowed us to be placed at the Ghent University Hospital (University Hospital of Belgium). We spent the observation period in the retina department of the Centre for Medical Genetics — a well-organised department with a busy daily schedule.
The environment in the clinic was excellent. The working conditions enabled the specialists to give their best to the patients in a low-stress atmosphere. The equipment was modern, which contributed to perfect diagnostic and surgical procedures.
We are grateful to the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Bart Leroy, who gave us the opportunity to become part of their team. His entire team was knowledgeable, clinically experienced, patient and collegial. We are especially thankful to Dr. Julie De Zytijd for her exceptional knowledge and skills, her great attitude and the unforgettable experience she provided. She discussed all clinical cases with us, shared her knowledge and experience, for which we have special gratitude and respect.
We wholeheartedly recommend Ghent University Hospital (University Hospital of Belgium) to all future applicants.
