The First European meeting of young ophthalmologists
‘The first European meeting of young ophthalmologists was held in the magnificent city of Porto in Portugal on the 11th and 12th of July 2014 . It was oversubscribed and attended by well over 200 young ophthalmologists from all over Europe. The meeting consisted of a series of lectures and workshops on ophthalmic surgery pitched for residents in their early years of training . The lectures were delivered by prominent and established young ophthalmic surgeons from all over Europe .

The second day was dedicated to rapid fire and video presentations and top prizes for Best Rapid fire Presentation, went to, Taylan Ozturk from Dokuz Eylul University School Of Medicine, Izmir, Turkey. The winner for Best video was awarded to Altug Cetinkaya from Dunyagoz Ankara Hastanesi.

On the Friday night ,the organising committee treated the delegates to a lavish dinner and party which was highly enjoyable and a great opportunity to interact and network. A round table held at the end of the last session discussed opportunities for young ophthalmologists and the SOE pledged to work on an initiative to start a fellowship programme in Europe as well as encourage widespread dissemination of information on training opportunities in Europe .
Everyone agreed that this was a very successful and enjoyable meeting and the SOE pledged to carry on this initiative with similar meetings in the future .
