Zehra Bahar GEY Observership Report Manchester Royal

I completed a three-week observership in the Oculoplastics Department at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) under the supervision of Dr. Sajid Ataullah, Head of the Department. From my first day, I felt warmly welcomed and integrated as if I had been part of the team for years. This experience has been truly invaluable, both professionally and personally. Dr. Sajid Ataullah and co-supervisor Dr. Anne Cook ensured that my observership was a comprehensive and enriching learning experience. I had the opportunity to participate in numerous outpatient clinics and observe a wide variety of surgeries, including various ptosis techniques, lacrimal gland biopsies, and surgeries for thyroid eye disease.

I also gained insights into dacryocystorhinostomy procedures and observed patients with rare diseases, which broadened my understanding of complex oculoplastic cases. Dr. Aruna Dharmasena’s guidance was particularly instrumental in showcasing diverse surgical approaches and outpatient management for a wide range of patients. A highlight of this observership was witnessing the orbital multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinic, where neurosurgeons, orbital radiologists, pathologists, maxillofacial surgeons, and ophthalmologists collaborated to address challenging skull base disorders. This collaborative environment offered a unique perspective on holistic patient care and interdepartmental teamwork.

I am also deeply grateful to the fellows, particularly Dr. Nikolitsa Koutropoulou, and the specialty trainees who supported me throughout my time at the hospital. Their dedication to teaching and their genuine interest in ensuring I made the most of this opportunity made my experience all the more meaningful. I wholeheartedly encourage residents and young ophthalmologists to apply for the SOE grant and seize the chance to learn from leading experts in premier ophthalmology centers across Europe. My time at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital has been an unforgettable milestone in my career development, and I am confident it will inspire others to pursue similar opportunities.
