Sophia Turdziladze, Georgia, Obsevership Report from the Ophthalmology unit at the University of Pisa, Italy
I would like to express my gratitude to the SOE Educational Committee and Professor Marko Hawlina, for awarding me the educational grant for Ophthalmologists-in-training, and the opportunity to conduct an observership in ophthalmology unit at the University of Pisa.
I spent four weeks at ophthalmology unit where I observed and examined a number of patients in outpatient clinic and observed a wide range of ophthalmic surgeries.
Furthermore, I had the possibility to observe anterior and posterior segment pathology, laser treatment for glaucoma ( iridotomy and selective trabeculoplasty), and many surgical procedures, including filtering surgeries for glaucoma, MIGS, corneal transplants DMEK, PK procedures, strabismus surgery, cataract surgery, vitrectomy.
I was able to follow the patients from pre-operating to post-operating care, and discuss with the colleagues the relevant ways of their treatment.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Marco Nardi for giving me the unique chance of internship and for sharing his professional experience which contributed in increasing of my both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. I would like to thank for his hospitality and kindness.
Special thanks to Prof Michele Figus who is an excellent doctor and a kind person.
Last but not least I would like to thank to Chiara Posarelli for dealing with the logistical and technical details and enabling the organization of my trip.
I would highly recommend this world class canter all my colleagues to apply in the future for the SOE Educational Grant.
