Mariam Ghazaryan, Armenia observership report from Moorfields Eye Hospital

Some journeys change you — and some make you realize how far you’ve come.

My observership at Moorfields Eye Hospital — a place that, for ophthalmologists, hardly needs an introduction — was made possible through the SOE grant, and it became one of those experiences that truly stays with you.

I was involved in daily clinical work, moving between clinics and operating theatres, observing a wide range of cases and approaches. My observership focused primarily on corneal pathologies, Uveitis and particularly Refractive Surgery, an area in which I am closely involved as the first SMILE surgeon in my country Armenia.

A particularly valuable part of this experience was learning from and being motivated by specialists such as Prof Carlos Pavesio, Dr Daniel Gore, and Prof Bruce Allan. It was especially exciting when senior doctors would ask for my opinion during case discussions. Watching how they approach cases, make decisions, and handle details in everyday practice gave me insights that are difficult to gain elsewhere.

I am also very grateful to my observership coordinator, Maria Pennycuick, whose careful organisation and constant support made everything run smoothly.

Beyond the clinical experience I also appreciated  the atmosphere filled with discussions and willingness to share knowledge.

I am thankful to the European Society of Ophthalmology for this opportunity.
