Anca Mădălina Sere, Romania, observership report from Helsinki University Hospital, Finland

At the beginning of 2026, I had the opportunity to visit Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUS) for a two-month observership under the supervision of Prof. Tero Kivelä. This experience was both enriching and rewarding, contributing not only to my professional development but also to my personal growth. It allowed me to gain valuable insights and establish meaningful connections in an inspiring and supportive environment.

During the first month, I was in the vitreoretinal surgery department, where I had the opportunity to follow a wide range of interesting and complex cases each day. I was able to assist several surgeons in the operating room, gaining hands-on insight into different techniques and approaches. I am particularly grateful to Dr. Petri Aaltonen, the head of the vitreoretinal department, who supervised me during this rotation. He organized my time exceptionally well and provided guidance not only through his extensive surgical expertise, but also through thoughtful personal mentorship. His advice and support will stay with me throughout my career, and I am deeply grateful for his patience and generosity in sharing his knowledge.

The second month I spent in the cornea and anterior segment department, where I had the opportunity to engage with a wide range of pathology, from rare medical cases to laser treatments and surgical procedures. Some of the most interesting cases for me included PKP, DSAEK, DMEK, and amniotic membrane transplantation. Being involved in these procedures in a high-volume, highly organized department significantly enhanced my clinical skills and understanding.

In addition, I had the opportunity to spend time in other departments, including observing Prof. Kivelä’s work in ocular oncology, and to attend weekly presentations and seminars dedicated to both residents and senior doctors. Finally, I found Helsinki to be a marvelous city, with welcoming, friendly people and beautiful natural surroundings. It was a genuine pleasure to live there, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience both the professional and cultural environment of Finland.
